AUSTRACLUB.com.au has confirmed that Upenn Bookstore will be moving into the historic bookstore building at 910 E. Main St., at the corner of Main and Main Streets in downtown Austin, the company confirmed today.
The bookstore will have a new, modern look, with a contemporary design with the same red-and-white motifs of Upenn’s history.
“We are excited to have this iconic bookstore on Main Street in Austin,” said David Lasker, CEO of Upen Bookstore.
Upenn is an Austin-based company with roots in the city of Austin, which has been described as “a thriving hub for independent booksellers”.
Upen Bookstores are located in downtown and in other cities around the country, with the first Upenn store in Austin opening in 2012.
Lasker said the Upenn shop would be located near the popular restaurant at the intersection of Main Street and Main Avenue, which will serve as the hub for the bookstore’s future business.
Austin City Councilmember Adam Smith, who is currently the city’s acting mayor, is scheduled to introduce a new ordinance that will allow the city to open up additional retail space to meet growing demand.
Smith said he was pleased to welcome Upenn to the city.
It is important that we recognize the economic opportunity that the bookstore will create for Austin, he said.
In the coming months, the city is also planning to add a new bookstore to the historic Austin Public Library.
A number of the booksells that Upen has been involved with have found success in the Austin market, including the popular Upenns bookstore, which opened in 2013 in the former Sears department store site.
