The University of Massachusetts-Amherst bookstore and other locations have been closed and moved, including the university’s bookstore on the campus of Tufts, according to an announcement made Monday by the Tufts administration.
The Tufts campus bookstore was closed on Monday.
The announcement came as a result of a lawsuit filed last month by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Massachusetts, which accused the bookstore of unlawfully profiting from student-books purchased through its online catalog.
The suit also alleges that Tufts violated federal antitrust laws by selling a number of its student-bookstore products to private universities without disclosing to students that the products would be used to sell books to third parties.
A lawyer for Tufts did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
The university said in the statement that it has “no intention of returning any of the university-produced student-authored books to students or any other third parties, and that Tuft does not plan to offer any discounts for students.”
The Tuft bookstore in Amherst will be sold to another vendor for a “substantial discount.”
The statement did not elaborate.
Tufts spokesman Michael Bielak said the Tuft campus bookstore, located in the former Tufts bookstore on University Avenue, is now closed, and it will be moved to a new location.
Tuft is notifying students of the closure and will “continue to offer discounts on student-produced books,” he said in a statement.
A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s office did not respond to a request for comment Monday.
Tuves is the largest U. of A. public university.
The campus bookstore in the city of Amhers has had a long history as the Tuets student bookstore, which opened in 1967.
Tuets was the first U. S. public college to open a bookstore.
Its main branch opened in 1969 and its second branch opened three years later.
In 2010, the school announced that the bookstore would be moved into a larger space on campus.
A Tufts spokesperson said the university is working with the U,S.
Department of Education and the federal government to finalize the sale of the Tufty campus bookstore.
“We are committed to providing our students with the best books possible and will continue to offer discounted pricing and promotions on student books as needed,” Bielk said in an email to the AP.
Tuias student bookstore is one of the largest in the United State.
In 2011, the U of A announced that it was buying the Tuis bookstore, after selling it to a private university.
Tuis bought the Tuits Tufts student bookstore for $2.6 million in 2016.
The bookstore had been owned by the university for almost 50 years, according a statement from the university.
“The Tufts Tufts Student Bookstore was the original Tufts university bookstore,” the statement said.
“It was a beloved institution for students and alumni of the U,” the university said.
The statement said that Tuits plans to open another Tufts location on campus and “continue providing discounts to our students.”
Tufts’ bookstore, the oldest on the college campus, opened in 1917 and had more than 1,600 books, the university statement said, adding that the Tufter was founded in 1876.
The U of Am. library system owns the Tufans Tufts bookshop.
Tuvia and its employees have been a staple at Amhersts campus bookstore since 1884, when a new Tufts store opened at the university, according the university website.
