The New Mexico Bookstore will open its doors this month, and a New Mexico-based bookseller will be among the first to open an online store.
The Kinokunya bookstore will be one of two new bookstores slated to open nationwide in 2018, along with the other Kinokuni bookstore in California, the Kinokushi Bookstore in San Jose, Calif., and a Kinokan Books and Audio Store in Las Vegas.
Kinokunisha is one of the oldest independent bookstores in the U.S., having been in operation since the early 1960s.
The company opened its first bookstore in 1978 in a small room in the back of a convenience store in the town of Yuma, Ariz., and has since expanded into a full-service store and bookstore.
It has been known for its Japanese-style and handmade titles, but also for more traditional American classics like classics like Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea, by William Faulkner, and The War and the Glory by John Steinbeck.
Kinukunya Books and Video will open on Dec. 11 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The company’s website says the new store will be a place to browse for Japanese-themed books, music, movies and other products.
“The goal is to give people a reason to come back to Kinokuninya and spend money at Kinokunnya, whether it’s for books, magazines or DVDs,” said Kimi Maki, the vice president of Kinokyu Books and Media, the company’s parent company.
Maki said the store’s aim is to help people “reconnect to the world of Japan, the country that has been so important to them and the bookstores they grew up with.”
